Cause of fire at Goodyear Tire Retread Plant under investigation

A fire which took place at the local Goodyear Tire recycling facility yesterday (Feb. 14) evening is still under investigation.

Deputy Chief Greg Saunders says just after 8 pm, crews from all three fire stations responded to the industrial structure fire at 100 Booth Road.

When crews arrived, Saunders says they saw a significant flame and smoke coming from a large hopper on the exterior of the facility.

“Fire crews did a great job to extinguish the fire, which was very difficult to access and were on scene at the facility until approximately 1 AM,” says Saunders.

He adds the Ministry of the Environment was notified about the fire as the water being used to suppress the fire was becoming an issue to the surrounding environment. The Ministry of Labour also attended the facility to ensure the protection of the workers on site.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

North Bay Fire is also thanking the City Public Works Department for attending the Fire last night.

Saunders says Public Works personnel attended last night with sand to set up a dyke to protect the environment by containing the contaminated water used in firefighting operations. He says at the direction of the Ministry of the Environment Goodyear has contracted a company to begin clean-up operations to further ensure the protection of the environment.
