Mattawa area flood warning has ended

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) says a flood warning has ended in the Mattawa area.

“The Ottawa River water level at Mattawa has decreased by around 145 cm from the high water on May 3. The water level is returning to near normal for this time of year,” says Angela Mills, NBMCA Flood Duty Officer. “A Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety is in place for the Mattawa River subwatershed including the Town of Mattawa.”

Mills says the water level on the Ottawa River at Mattawa is below the minor flood threshold and is expected to decrease further this week, based on information from the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board.

Officials continue to urge caution as the flows are still high on the Ottawa River.

Meanwhile, the Conservation Authority says a flood watch continues for the Lake Nipissing shoreline and nearby parts of Parks Creek, Chippewa Creek and La Vase River, which are influenced by high lake levels.

“The lake water level has begun to decrease,” says Chitra Gowda, NBMCA CAO. “However strong winds and wave action are a concern while lake levels remain high.”

The Conservation Authority says the measure will be in effect until (or updated before) Wednesday, May 24 at 4 pm.
