North Bay Fire Chief urging residents to install smoke alarms

North Bay’s Fire Chief is urging residents to install smoke alarms in their homes after a fatal fire in Brampton this week. The fire department is also reminding residents to make sure they have working smoke alarms on every storey of their home and outside any rooms they sleep in.

Jason Whiteley says many fatal fire happen at night when people are asleep, so early warnings are crucial for survival. It’s not yet known if there were working smoke alarms at the house involved in the fire in Brampton. Whiteley says the Ontario Fire Code requires working smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas.

Whiteley says for added protection, the North Bay Fire Department is recommending people also install a smoke alarm in every bedroom. He says larger homes may require additional smoke alarms. He says it’s just as important for everyone in a home to know exactly what to do if a fire starts as it is to have working smoke alarms. Whiteley finished by saying they want to make sure these types of tragedies do not happen in North Bay.
