City police refer complaint to Ontario Provincial Police

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirm the North Bay Police Service referred a complaint to them concerning allegations involving the mayor of North Bay, who also serves on the North Bay Police Services Board.

“We can confirm that the OPP has opened an investigation into the matter,” says Provincial Constable Rob Lewis, in a statement.

The North Bay Police Service, in a previous release in regards to inquiries about the mayor’s expenses, said due to an institutional conflict of interest, any complaint or report pertaining to a member of the Police Services Board, would be referred to another police service for investigation.

In late June, Mayor Peter Chirico asked the Integrity Commissioner to investigate his expenses.

At that time, he said the finance department felt about $16,000 in expenses from 2023 and 2024 should not have been claimed as city expenses.

All of the money was paid back.

“While the City of North Bay has not been contacted by the Ontario Provincial Police regarding this matter, we will provide any information and assistance that may be requested,” says Gord Young, Communications Officer, in a provided statement.
