Traffic lights to be installed at Corbeil Corners

East Ferris Mayor Bill Vrebosch is pleased that traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of Highway 17 and Highway 94, also known as Corbeil Corners.

Vrebosch says that it has taken him two decades of consultations and studies involving the MTO to address the issues of speed and a grade in the main road that makes turning from the side roads onto Highway 17 dangerous.

Vrebosch says that additional turning lanes will be added to the configuration, with the incline being reduced in that hill that Vrebosch likens to an “optical illusion,” for drivers. Flashing warning lights indicating the light changing to red for highway travellers, similar to the arrangement on the Highway 11/17 bypass approaching Cassells Street while heading east, will be employed.

Numerous motor vehicle accidents and some fatalities have occurred at the intersection, says Vrebosch.

The MTO added the flashing light that currently operates above the intersection during Vrebosch’s tenure as the reeve and later, the mayor. He says that he pushed for a roundabout to be installed, but settled for traffic lights after talks with the MTO.

Lara Cantin of the MTO confirms that “the ministry is planning improvements at the intersection of Highway 17 & Highway 94 and the work includes installation of traffic lights and lowering the grade of highway west of the intersection for better sightlines. The timing of construction has not been determined and depends on property acquisition and funding approvals.”

Vrebosch says he hopes the new traffic measures will be in place beginning in spring 2018 with work stretching into summer.
