Uncertainty over age of moose leads to fine

The MNRF is reporting that Kenneth Paquette of Field has been fined $2,000 for illegally shooting a bull moose after pleading guilty to hunting big game without a licence.

Court heard that on October 23, 2016, Paquette had been party hunting for calf moose in Thistle Township when he shot and killed a bull moose thinking it was a calf. Paquette then called a conservation officer to report that he had shot what was described as a big calf with antler nubs. The tag holder of the party attached a calf seal to the bull moose. A conservation officer visited the hunt camp and found the moose skinned and hanging with the head removed. The head was found discarded in the bush with the antlers cut off. The moose was seized and forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Monique Mechefske heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on January 15.
