It’s May, but MAAC is already thinking ahead to next winter

The Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee is pleased with the progress made in improving snow removal in the City of North Bay – to a point.

MAAC’s Chair Nora Long and Council representative Mike Anthony have arranged for a meeting with key City staffers to address how to continue a higher level of service throughout the winter months. Again, the committee is generally pleased but would like to see service levels maintained to winter’s conclusion.

In 2016, MAAC presented ideas regarding the issues that those with accessibility challenges face when it comes to snow removal, including in disabled parking spaces and at corners of city blocks where snow has been inadequately cleared to allow for a wheelchair or other device that provides mobility assistance to safely pass. A representative from the Transit department will likely join staffers and managing directors from parks and recreation, which is responsible for snow removal in the downtown core, and engineering and works.

Anthony says MAAC is looking to be proactive by getting a jump on the eventual winter of 2018-19. The City Councillor points out that MAAC is an “advisory” committee and the aim is to voice concerns and suggestions with staff well ahead of winter.
