Maroosis withdraws Civic Holiday name change motion but will revisit

The Civic Holiday name will remain unchanged  – for now.

Councillor George Maroosis withdrew a motion seconded by Councillor Mac Bain regarding the renaming of the Civic Holiday at last night’s regular meeting.

Maroosis says the timing did not quite work out to change the name this year. He says the move remains very much in play, adding that he is hopeful that it be in place by next year.

The proposed name of the holiday is Zoongaabwidaa Giizhgad Day – Standing Strong Together Day, a name created in concert with Nipissing First Nation elders demonstrates the partnership between Nipissing First Nation and the City of North Bay. The Civic Holiday would be renamed to reflect the cooperation and respect between the two.

The renaming of the holiday is permitted by provincial legislation on a municipal level and Councillors Maroosis and Bain brought a motion forward last year suggesting a partnership with Nipissing First Nation in renaming the August holiday Monday.
