Smoke update for North Bay from the Fire Chief

North Bay Fire Chief Jason Whiteley is providing an update on the smoke conditions in North Bay.

Whiteley says winds today will be from the west-southwest and will push smoke from the Parry Sound 33 forest fire. The Chief adds there are no municipal or forest fires in the immediate area.

“We are currently seeing very thick smoke beginning to encapsulate the city causing poor air quality and reducing visibility. These higher levels of air pollution may persist for the next few days when the wind is coming from the west-southwest.

“Please take extra care today! Environment Canada has a special air quality statement still in effect for the North Bay area. As smoke descends to ground level and the air quality deteriorates, individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk. Visit www.airhealth.ca for information on how to reduce your health risk and your personal contribution to pollution levels, as well as for current and forecast AQHI values.

“The fire risk is at HIGH. The City of North Bay and the Ministry of Natural Resources continues to maintain a fire ban. This means all open air burning within the City of North Bay is prohibited, except for barbeques and propane fired devices. Anyone ignoring the ban will be fined.”
