Inquest set in case of man who died in police custody

Proceedings will take place at the North Bay Courthouse beginning next Monday to further examine the death of a man who was in OPP custody after being arrested for impaired driving.

Regional Supervising Coroner for North Region, Sudbury Office, Dr. David Cameron confirmed the dates for the inquest into the death of John Roberts last week. The inquest will begin at 9:00am on Monday and is expected to last two days. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

Roberts was 49 when he died at the North Bay Regional Health Centre on December 15, 2016, while in police custody for impaired driving.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Roberts’ death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

Steven Bodley will preside as inquest coroner and Russ Wood will be counsel to the coroner.
