Rising water issue on Sturgeon River over but caution still advised

The issue of water rising on the upper Sturgeon River has eased however, the incident has created weak and unstable ice conditions.

On Thursday the West Nipissing Police issued a warning telling snowmobilers, skiers and people not to venture onto the ice.

The warning was the result of difficulty controlling the water flow at the Sturgeon Falls dam because of a mechanical problem at the West Nipissing Power Generation station.

However, the flow is now under control and the warning has been lifted.

But Police Chief Ray St. Pierre says the public needs to know that Thursday’s incident has affected the ice thickness along the shoreline.

St. Pierre also says there are cracks in the ice by the shoreline.

He strongly recommends people check ice conditions before heading onto the frozen river.

St. Pierre also suggests people use floatation suits and to also carry an ice pick and cell phone in case they run into trouble.

The Police Chief adds letting people know where you’re headed and when you’re expected to return.

Another suggestion from St. Pierre is if possible, don’t travel over the ice alone.
