Removing barriers so more can enjoy a day at the beach

Marathon Beach is about to become more accessible this summer.

The City of North Bay is announcing a new mobility mat will be in place to increase accessibility at the beach located on the shore of Lake Nipissing this June.

The project originated with the Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee (MAAC) and has finally come to fruition after being included in this year’s budget. According to municipal officials, the mat will extend from the brick walkway near the playground, over the sandy beach, to the lake.

MAAC council representative Scott Robertson says the mat is aimed at making it easier for people with disabilities to access the water but not necessarily just for those in wheelchairs. “There are a lot of people who have accessibility barriers, physical barriers,” says Robertson, and “it is certainly wheelchair accessible,” to help more citizens and visitors to the beach have access all the way down to the water’s edge.
