King’s ‘landing’ at Armed Forces Day

There were some gasps from the large crowd at King’s Landing on Armed Forces Day as one of the members of the SkyHawks Parachute Team ran out of real estate at Marathon Beach while landing and careened into the side of the dock.

Four young boys were in the direct line of the Canadian Armed Forces parachute demonstrator but he expertly made little contact, leaving them more wide-eyed than bruised. One of the boys’ parents confirmed no injuries were sustained.

The same could be said for the parachutist, who was quickly swarmed by first responders, including North Bay Police Chief-to-be Scott Tod. The jumper walked away from the incident without major injury. He later said he and his partner had discussed their route to descend, explaining his partner had the longer area to land and his was shorter, leaving little room for error when the winds changed suddenly. One onlooker affiliated with the SkyHawks team said his training and quick-thinking averted what could have been a much more dangerous situation.
