High water levels extinguish Callander fireworks

In planning your Canada Day weekend, be aware programming at FunFest in Callander on Saturday will go as scheduled but the fireworks display will not.

Municipal officials, including Mayor Hec Lavigne, are following the recommendation of Callander Fire Chief Todd Daley to cancel the traditional Canada Day weekend fireworks display due to high water levels.

“We are naturally disappointed that we have to postpone the fireworks. They have been part of the FunFest celebrations for decades and people love them. But we have to respect the Fire Chief’s assessment. If we can’t keep a safe distance we can’t go ahead at this time.”

Daley said, “The water is still high and a significant portion of the Centennial Park beach where we set up the fireworks is under water.  The part that is not under water does not provide enough room to set up and safely discharge the fireworks.”

As they have in the past when postponing the Canada Day weekend FunFest fireworks, officials in Callander will push them back August and include them as part of the Sirens in the Park festivities on August 17.

FunFest will kick off with the pancake breakfast at 7:30am on Saturday, followed by the parade on Main Street beginning at 11:00am and a full schedule of events.
