Canadore to update investigation once board can ‘review and consider’ report

An investigator’s report examining allegations of a toxic workplace environment at Canadore College will be presented Friday.

Canadore President George Burton said the Board of Governors will “take the time to review and consider the report and expect that we will be providing an update shortly thereafter.”

The report is expected to address bullying, harassment, and abuse of power in the school’s ranks. The investigator was hired almost a year ago in the wake of a human rights complaint by a former employee.

OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas has demanded a complete copy of the investigator’s report into the college’s workplace culture.

Thomas said dozens upon dozens of workers, students, and community members offered testimony, including more than 50 OPSEU members.

“It’s time to get serious about healing Canadore’s workplace culture,” Thomas wrote to board chair Bob Nicholls. “The first step is ensuring that the workers and their union see the investigator’s complete report. We will not stop demanding it until we get it.”

Thomas said OPSEU is going to make sure that people are held accountable and that real change starts to happen at Canadore.

Burton said Canadore retained the third-party investigator, “In order to ensure that all members of the Canadore community had the opportunity to make their voices heard in a protected environment and to determine the extent of these issues and how we might best address them.”
