The North Bay Police Service has charged a local man with multiple offences under the Highway Traffic Act and vehicle for hire (VFH) bylaw.
A dozen charges were laid on Friday and include six counts each of operating a vehicle for hire without a vehicle for hire driver’s and owner’s licence.
Police say of the charges carries a fine of $630, for a total over $7,500.
“Members of the public rely on the safety and accountability of licensed vehicle-for-hire services,” says Insp. Scott McFarlane. “When individuals operate outside of these regulations, it puts passengers at risk and undermines those who are following the law. We will continue to take these matters seriously and maintain a zero-tolerance approach to unlicensed operations.”
Police say the City of North Bay regulates VFH, including taxis, limousines, and rideshare services, through municipal by-laws, adding the regulations are in place to support public safety, consumer protection, and service quality for both passengers and drivers.
The say all vehicles-for-hire operating in the city must be properly licensed and comply with these requirements, and residents are encouraged to use only licensed vehicle-for-hire services.
Anyone who is aware of or suspects an unlicensed vehicle-for-hire operation is encouraged to report it to the NBPS at 705-497-5555, select option 5 to speak with an officer.
