Students walk a beat to deliver messages to public

For public education purposes, two Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) students will be leaving reminders for residents of Callander and North Bay.

This program, sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services, provides jobs for youth between the ages of 15 to 18 to work with police departments across Ontario so they can develop skills that could lead to a possible career in policing.

Two local secondary school students will have an opportunity to work in a variety of areas, including information technology, forensic identification, community events and traffic safety.

This year the North Bay Police Service has two YIPI students, Kyle McDiarmid from Widdifield and Samantha Adams from Algonquin.

The YIPI students are assigned to the Community Programs Section. Part of the program this year involves helping to educate members of the public. Over the next two weeks, you will see the students out in the community with North Bay Police’s Door Hanger Initiative or at the malls and parking lots putting reminders on windshields reminding you to “Lock it or lose it.”

The Door Hanger Initiative includes messages such as “lock it or lose it,” “drive sober,” and “don’t be a victim of fraud.” They also contain several phone numbers that the police service is consistently asked for. Now you can have them in a handy place.
