Protect your property at the cottage

Several cottage owners have gone back to their summer homes to find their property has been taken.

North Bay OPP says it happens every year and there are ways to prevent it. OPP say thieves target cottages because they are isolated and left vacant for long periods of time.

They are generally looking for big items such as generators, pumps, boat motors among other items.

Police say you should take those things back home if you can, or lock everything up using a dead bolt on exterior doors.

Put outdoor lights on a timer and windows should be boarded up for the off-season.

They add if you see any vehicles or people that look out of place call police immediately and always report any stolen property.
