Community rallies to keep six-year-old on the ice

What started out as a stolen hockey bag quickly turned into a successful community campaign to keep a six-year-old player on the ice.

Bryce Khober posted to a community social media page about the stolen bag, saying her son Jaykub had hockey Thursday night, and that’s when they found out it was gone.

“My son’s face just dropped. He started bawling his eyes out. He didn’t know what to do,” she says. “It kind of felt like his first year of hockey came to an end because someone stole the bag out of his Dad’s car at the mall.”

The post, which was made in hopes of seeing the equipment returned, led to an outpouring of support.

“I’m blown away by how many people have reached out, commented, messaged me, offered equipment, offered to buy him things,” says Khober. “It’s a lot and it’s amazing to see the community come together to get a little boy back on the ice.”

She says one person went out and bought new skates right away and delivered them while another offered to buy all new equipment today (Oct. 23) to ensure he’s back at hockey tomorrow.

“I just want to say thank you so much to everyone, we’re very overwhelmed and thankful,” she says.

Khober says if the stolen hockey bag and equipment is returned or found, it will be donated.
