Maroosis mining motion passes but will it matter?

Following Tuesday’s regular meeting of North Bay City Council, Councillor George Maroosis said that it was a case of “nothing ventured, nothing gained.”

The veteran councillor was referring to unanimous support of his motion to back a bid by Timmins to secure a ferrochrome processing facility. Maroosis says that if North Bay is not to be considered among the candidates, backing the one that will have the economic spinoff for the city only makes sense. A successful bid by Timmins is thought to have a significant economic impact on the ONTC.

And, despite reports to the contrary, both Maroosis and Mayor Al McDonald say that neither the City of North Bay nor its economic development team has been approached by Noront about interest in being the home for their chromite ore smelter.

Councillor Mark King says he believes that the decision has been made by the proponent already. King says that a site near Capreol will win the bid, effectively rendering Maroosis’ well-intended motion moot.
