Man charged in Sweeney murder to seek bail

The man charged with the first degree murder of Renee Sweeney will remain behind bars into the new year.

Robert Steven Wright, 39, made an appearance via video link in a Sudbury courtroom today from the Sudbury Jail. Wright’s case has been remanded to January 3, 2019.

Berk Keaney, one of the lawyers representing Wright said in court today he will be seeking a bail hearing for his client and has set a meeting with a regional senior justice in February to that effect.

Wright, who lives and works in North Bay, was charged December 11 after investigators say forensic evidence led them to the lab technician who police say was a Sudbury resident at the time of the killing in 1998.

The stabbing death of Sweeney, then a Laurentian University student working at a Sudbury video store, kept investigators following up on leads for more than 20 years.

Kim Sweeney, the sister of the victim, released a statement thanking investigators for their diligence following the developments in the case which led to Wright’s arrest.
