One year ago, snow was our foe

What a difference one year makes.

At this time last winter, the area was experiencing crippling record snow levels, although snowmobilers and the tourist sector did not mind. Several locales in North Bay and area were about to embark on a cycle of spring melting and heavy rainfall that would ultimately lead to the spring flooding of 2019.

See below the MyNorthBayNow.com article from Feb. 4, 2019.

I wanna know: How deep is that snow?

It will come as a relief to many that snow depth and water content is close to normal for this time of the year with just a slight change since the last snow survey on January 15.

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) measures snow depth and water content as part of its Flood Forecasting and Warning Program.

Snow is measured at three locations in the watershed. In February 2019, the NBMCA reported average snow depth for all sites as 71 cm (172% normal) and average water equivalence as 110.7 mm (136% normal).

This year, “The average snow depth for all sites is 29.7 cm (88% normal) and average water equivalence is 55.3 mm (87% normal),” said Kurtis Romanchuk NBMCA’s Water Resources Engineer.
