“Canada Summer Jobs helps connect employers in Nipissing-Timiskaming and across the country with the workforce of the future,” Rota says. “I encourage young people to visit jobbank.gc.ca/youth today to find many great summer job opportunities in fields that interest them.”

He says the Canada Summer Jobs program helps young people to earn money over the summer, while gaining skills and experience.

New jobs are also expected to be added over the coming weeks.

MNRF extends flood warning in the area

0

A flood warning has been extended for another week by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for several areas in the North Bay District, including Lake Nipissing.

Residents are advised to keep a close watch on conditions and exercise caution around shorelines and low-lying areas.

Officials say water levels on Lake Nipissing are high, with the latest measurement just below the ‘non-damage’ level.

They add flooding continues along the shoreline of the lake.

The ministry says it’s closely monitoring developing watershed conditions and the weather, with more rain in the forecast this weekend.

Funding for mental health and addictions services to support students locally

0

The province is investing $5 million towards mental health and addictions services in primary care across 10 post-secondary schools, including locally.

Funding is going to Nipissing University, which is partnering with Canadore College, to support unique “back-to-campus” services for students in hospice care for acute and chronic mental health conditions.

The province says mental health projects will provide learners in underserved communities in northeastern, eastern and south-central Ontario with care from trained mental health professionals.

“This is Mental Health Week in Canada, and our government recognizes how essential mental health care is in setting postsecondary students up for success,” said Jill Dunlop, Minister of Colleges and Universities. “This funding will ensure those students in underserved communities can receive the high-quality mental health care they need, directly from their school.”

The investment will support hiring nurse practitioners, social workers and others to provide mental health and addictions services to treat and care for students.

Funding will also fill large gaps in services and even provide clinical mental health care in places where none currently exist.

Council awards McKeown Ave reconstruction tender

0

Get ready for road work on McKeown Avenue.

Council has approved the $9.5 million reconstruction tender for a stretch of the roadway between Cartier Street and the roundabout at Gormanville Road.

Work is expected to begin early this summer.

Councillor Justine Mallah, chair of community services, says she’s looking forward to the project.

“I personally have, and I’m sure many of my fellow city council members have, received concerns about the current state,” she says. “Widening McKeown to four lanes will help with traffic flow and increase safety with new traffic lights providing controlled access for pedestrians and cyclists. “

Traffic lights will be installed at the intersection with McNamara Street. Improvements also include a multi-use path from Gormanville to A&W with plans to extend it to Airport Road in the future.

Council also approved a $1.1 million contract for professional engineering services for the sidewalk program.

“I believe this will increase the walkability of our city and increase accessibility and safety along our transit routes,” says Mallah.

Construction of the various sections of sidewalks is expected to start this year with the final section completed in 2031.

Health Unit promoting effective emergency preparedness

0

This is emergency preparedness week and the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit has some tips to keep you safe.

Officials say emergency events ranging from infectious diseases to extreme weather, flooding and fires can happen here.

They’re encouraging residents to know the risks, make a plan, and have an emergency kit.

Along with figuring out safe rooms to use for shelter, they say locate all utility shutoffs, have a working fire extinguisher and working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home.

Below is the full list of considerations when making an emergency management plan:
– Develop an emergency plan with family members and loved ones. Consider conducting drills to practice your plan.
– Know the risks. Consider that all municipalities are vulnerable to many potential emergencies like severe weather, chemical spills, or an influenza pandemic.
– Determine safe rooms in your home to use for shelter.
– Post emergency phone numbers and your address in a central location at your house.
– Choose an out-of-town contact every family member should call or email if the family gets separated in an emergency. An out-of-town contact is less likely to be affected by the same emergency.
– Ensure that even young children know their address and phone number.
– Locate gas, water heater and electrical shutoffs in your home and mark them with labels (colour-coded if possible).
– Prepare for family health needs (medication, medical supplies, etc.), make provisions for any special needs, and learn First Aid and CPR. Establish a meeting place if separated during an evacuation.
– To best protect pets, bring them with you; locate a shelter and pack supplies.
– Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home and check that they are working each month.
– Have a working fire extinguisher on hand.

The health unit says for more information on emergency preparedness visit www.GetPrepared.ca.

(UPDATE) No injuries after massive fire at Stradwicks

City fire crews continued to douse hot spots early Wednesday morning after a massive fire at Stradwicks Carpet One on Brule Street.

The call came in just before 10 pm Tuesday with flames continuing to shoot through the roof of the complex late into the night.

Platoon Chief Steve Denomme says they encountered heavy flames, fire and smoke when they arrived on the scene.

“[It had] actually broken through the centre to the rear part of the building and flames were probably 25-30 feet high,” he says. “Once we determined there wasn’t anybody inside we decided to have a defensive attack.”

He says crews also worked to protect a fuel depot across the street.

“One of our issues was to make sure none of the embers and sparks didn’t create any more problems for us,” Denomme says.

He also says extra firefighters were brought in to battle the blaze.

“We brought in two code yellows. Two extra crews,” Denomme says. “One stayed at the main hall and the second came here and aided. We actually had four crews on site. Stations 1, 2 and 3 and a code yellow.”

Denomme says there were no injuries and fire prevention will be investigating the cause.

The building is a total loss.

Franklin Street was closed for several hours overnight but is back open.

A huge plume of smoke was visible from various parts of the city late into the night on Tuesday.

Design-builder selected for new community and recreation centre project

0

The next step in seeing a new community and recreation centre built in North Bay has been approved by council.

Mississauga’s EllisDon Corporation has been awarded a $2.6 million project development services contract.

“This initial phase of the progressive design build process is aimed at achieving early alignment on cost, schedule and functional program paving the way for council to select a preferred design concept,” says Councillor Lana Mitchell, chair of Infrastructure and Operations.

She adds there’s more work to do, and further approvals required, after that.

“The process will then involve further refinement including generating cost estimates with value-engineering options prior to a public meeting to gather feedback to be used to help us inform the actual form, size, character and design details of the project as we move forward.” Mitchell says.

She says negotiations for a guaranteed maximum price, which council has already set at nearly $60 million, will then take place along with completing design documents.

Mitchell says that will all come back to council for approval, adding the target for completing construction is the end of December 2025.

During Tuesday’s meeting, some councillors lauded the work EllisDon has done on arena projects in Sault Ste Marie, Wasaga Beach and Madison Square Gardens in New York City.

The new twin-ice pad facility will be located at the Steve Omischl Sports Field Complex on Lakeshore Drive.

Two area festivals receive provincial funding

0

Provincial funding is on its way to two area festivals.

Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing announced Mattawa Voyageur Days and Le Carnaval des Compagnons are each receiving $55,000.

“The Experience Ontario 2024 investment will attract visitors to Mattawa and North Bay and increase our local economy,” says MPP Vic Fedeli. “Our government is encouraging Ontarians to explore all that these local communities have to offer by extending stays in accommodation, eating in restaurants and supporting small businesses.”

The 25th Mattawa Voyageur Days is taking place July 26-28.

Friday night’s country line-up includes The Washboard Union and headliner James Barker Band.

Our Lady Peace is headlining Saturday’s concerts.

The 62nd Carnaval des Compagnons is taking place in Feb. 2025.

Police drone training takes to the sky over North Bay

0

You may notice police drone activity over the city on Tuesday (May 7).

The North Bay Police Service is taking part in drone training with its policing partners from Peel Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police.

“Drones will play an important role in the future of policing as they start to be deployed in certain circumstances,” says Deputy Chief Michael Daze. “Many police services through North America are implementing drones in different scenarios to increase officer safety and enhance other services, such as search and rescue operations.”

Officials say the drone program has already yielded positive results with the training taking place to further enhance the program.
